Microneedling, (skin needling) is a procedure using a device covered with tiny, shallow needles that essentially poke holes in the skin surface. Those holes are actually therapeutic, since they cause a ‘micro injury’ that prompts skin to stimulate collagen production, filling in fine lines, plumping the skin, evening out skin pigmentation and contributing to a more youthful look.
Many of us are afraid of needles however if you can tolerate a few minutes of slight discomfort (we do use numbing cream to reduce the annoying prickling feeling caused by the machine) this minimally invasive treatment is incredibly effective.
WRINKLES AND AGING
The micro-injuries created stimulates the body’s natural wound healing processes, resulting in cell turnover and increased collagen and elastin production, therefore reversing as well as preventing signs of aging.
SUN DAMAGE/ HYPERPIGMENTATION/ BURNS/SCARS
Once again, collagen is arguably the most vital way to improve the look of skin, and this goes far beyond reducing wrinkles. By stimulating collagen growth with microneedling, you can also reverse sun damage and skin discoloration from burns, acne and scars.
Finally, a great benefit of microneedling is that this treatment isn’t exclusive to the face. It can be done on any area of skin that needs to be repaired—particularly areas that display stretch marks or acne or surgical scars, like the legs, chest, back, and butt. As few as four to six sessions could make a difference in these problem areas.
SURGICAL SCARS (C-Section, Breast Lifts, Breast Augmentation, Tummy Tuck etc)
A surgical scar is a type of injury to skin caused by surgery, usually an incision. Because a surgeon cannot control all the factors that determine the appearance of a scar, treatment after the surgical area has properly healed is sometimes necessary.
These types of scars can thicken over time. In the past, scar therapy has been limited. The micro needle pen’s unique vertical stamping and depth control, up to 2.5mm, can help soften the appearance of surgical scars significantly. With surgical steel integrity, the robust nature of the automated needle tip penetrate difficult scar tissue, dramatically improving appearance, texture, elasticity, size and mobility. Multiple microneedling treatments are recommended and may vary depending on the severity and type of surgical scar.
Our skin is elastic and has the ability to stretch out and return to its natural elasticity and form. Stretch marks appear on areas of the body where the skin is stretched beyond its natural capacity. Look at it like a rubber band that you keep stretching till it snaps. Also as we age the skins ability to rebound is diminished.
Microneedling can significantly improve the appearance of stretch marks. Microneedle therapy, or collagen induction therapy, improves the color and texture of stretch marks, and makes the scars blend with the surrounding skin. Microneedling also reduces the width and indentation of stretch marks, and encourages the growth of tiny inlets of normal skin. So, while no method currently exists to repair stretch marks, a microneedle therapy system lightens their appearance, to the point of making them almost invisible.
Microneedling create microscopic injuries in the stretch marks and the body responds by producing new collagen at the wound sites. This natural reaction by the body heals the tears in the dermis responsible for the stretch marks. As the outer layer of the skin is not affected by micro needling, the new collagen generated is used only to help heal the stretch marks.
Stretch marks require a series of microneedling sessions, usually at 4-6 week intervals.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING MICRONEEDLING
First, an anesthetic cream is applied to the patient’s skin to keep them comfortable during the procedure. Next we apply a light layer of hydrating serum to lubricate your skin and make the derma-pen glide more smoothly. The device glides over the patient’s skin, creating tiny holes in the surface. The process typically takes less than 30 minutes, and afterward, your skin will be red, similar to a sunburn.
Skin may be red for a few days post-treatment. This is perfectly normal. It may feel like you have a sunburn, also normal. Typically you will feel “normal” and back to yourself approx 3-4 days after treatment. Slight peeling may occur.
Those looking to treat deep wrinkles, stretch marks, severe sun damage or scarring may need multiple microneedling treatments. To ensure the safety of your skin, treatments are usually spaced out four weeks apart. This time period allows your own body to repair and rejuvenate before the next treatment.
